Alstom Secures €107 Million Contract Renewal for Maintenance of 250 Indian Railways Locomotives

French rolling stock manufacturer Alstom has been awarded a five-year contract renewal valued at €107 million for the maintenance of 250 locomotives operated by Indian Railways. The maintenance work will be carried out at Alstom’s Nagpur depot.

This contract extends a previous four-year agreement between Indian Railways and Alstom’s joint venture with the national transporter, Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited (MELPL).

The locomotives under this contract are the 12,000 horsepower Prima T8 WAG-12B models. These high-powered engines play a key role in India’s green mobility initiatives. They can haul loads up to 6,000 tonnes at speeds reaching 120 kilometres per hour.

Primarily deployed on the Dedicated Freight Corridors, these locomotives enhance freight capacity substantially while contributing to reduced carbon emissions.

Under the terms of the agreement, MELPL will manage the full maintenance of the 250 locomotives as well as the associated depot infrastructure.

Alstom will continue to operate specialised Prompt Response Teams (PRTs) at strategic locations across India. Equipped with tools and spares, these teams ensure quick resolution of issues to maximise fleet availability.

This continued partnership highlights Alstom’s integral role in supporting Indian Railways’ freight operations and sustainability goals.
