
The electrification drive has been pursued in mission mode, with all new line and multi-tracking projects now sanctioned and constructed with electrification from the outset. The program reflects one of the fastest and largest railway electrification efforts globally, undertaken primarily between 2014 and 2026.
Electric traction offers significant environmental and operational benefits. It improves energy efficiency, reduces dependency on fossil fuels, and lowers carbon emissions. Indian Railways has cut diesel consumption drastically—from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to approximately 108 crore litres in 2024-25—saving around 185 crore litres overall. This reduction not only decreases India’s carbon footprint but also saves precious foreign exchange by reducing fuel imports.
Rail electrification also enables integration with renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. As of June 2026, Indian Railways has commissioned about 1,161 MW of solar power capacity through rooftop and land-based plants, along with 103 MW of wind power projects. The railways aim to progressively meet their traction power requirements through renewable energy and hybrid systems, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable and green operations.
Undertaking “Mission 100% Electrification” has involved overcoming challenges of electrifying operational lines. To expedite this, Indian Railways has implemented measures including the creation of a Project Monitoring Group portal, enhanced project monitoring, assured funding, and greater financial authority for field units.
Electrification progress varies by zone and state, with significant achievements in key regions like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
