Indian Railways Cuts Diesel Use by 178 Crore Litres in 2024–25; 99.4% Broad Gauge Network Electrified

62% Reduction in Diesel Consumption Since 2016–17 | 25 States Achieve 100% Electrification | 10,932 Route Km Electrified Since 2023–24

Indian Railways (IR) has achieved a major milestone in its mission-mode electrification programme, with 99.4% of the Broad Gauge (BG) network now electrified, significantly reducing diesel dependency and enhancing sustainability.

In 2024–25 alone, Indian Railways saved 178 crore litres of diesel compared to 2016–17, marking a 62% reduction in diesel consumption and substantially lowering crude oil import dependency.

Electrification Progress: A Decade of Acceleration

Railway electrification has witnessed unprecedented acceleration over the past decade.

Route Kilometres Electrified

Period Route Kilometres
Before 2014 (approx. 60 years) 21,801 km
2014–2025 46,900 km

Since 2023–24, a total of 10,932 Route Kilometres (Rkm) have been electrified (till January 2026).

All newly sanctioned lines and multi-tracking projects are being constructed with electrification.

₹29,826 Crore Invested in Electrification (Last 5 Years)

Between 2020–21 and 2024–25, Indian Railways invested ₹29,826 crore in electrification projects.

The total expenditure on traction energy during 2024–25 stood at ₹32,378 crore.

Project completion timelines depend on multiple factors such as:

  • Forest and statutory clearances

  • Utility shifting

  • Geological and topographical conditions

  • Law & order situation

  • Climatic constraints

Why Electrification Over Bio-Diesel?

While trials on bio-diesel have been conducted, electric traction has emerged as significantly more viable due to:

  • Lower operational cost

  • Reduced emissions

  • Higher energy efficiency

  • Improved hauling capacity

  • Reduced import dependency

Strategic Impact

With near-complete electrification of the Broad Gauge network and robust environmental initiatives, Indian Railways is positioning itself as:

  • A low-carbon transport backbone

  • A cost-efficient freight and passenger carrier

  • A major contributor to India’s energy security

  • A cleaner and passenger-friendly mobility system

The mission-mode electrification drive represents one of the largest rail electrification programmes globally and marks a structural transition toward sustainable rail transport in India.
