This initiative is part of Indian Railways’ broader effort to modernise signalling infrastructure on critical routes, aiming to improve safety, reliability, and operational performance across the network.
Currently, many signalling installations rely on outdated relay technology. These ageing systems suffer from issues like non-segregation of clean and dirty wiring, obsolete power supplies, inadequate earthing, and worn-out equipment, leading to increased maintenance demands and higher failure risks.
The project will replace these legacy systems with advanced Electronic Interlocking technology, offering higher reliability, enhanced safety, and faster fault detection. EI systems use digital technology for precise control of train movements and signalling, significantly reducing signalling failures and enabling quicker restoration during faults.
The modernised signalling infrastructure will facilitate smoother train operations on some of India’s busiest corridors and elevate safety standards for both passenger and freight services.
Additionally, this project supports Indian Railways’ strategy to develop a signalling ecosystem compatible with cutting-edge advancements such as Kavach, Automatic Block Signalling, and Centralised Traffic Control on heavily trafficked routes.
This approval underscores Indian Railways’ ongoing commitment to upgrading critical infrastructure, enhancing service reliability, and ensuring a safer, more efficient railway network for passengers and freight customers alike.
