Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently reviewed the progress of the Kazipet rail manufacturing unit in Telangana and confirmed that the facility will soon be operational.
The unit is set to produce 200 intercity trains over the next five years. These trains will serve short-distance travel routes across India, primarily covering journeys up to 300 kilometers with frequent stops.
Designed to act as shuttle services, the intercity trains will connect adjacent towns and cities, offering a convenient and affordable option for commuters. This initiative aims to support students travelling to nearby towns for education and citizens who commute for healthcare and work.
Each train will have a 20-coach configuration, featuring modern amenities such as automatic door closing systems, superior ventilation, and a safe coach design. The trains will be equipped with jerk-free couplers and bogies and will operate at speeds of up to 130 kmph.
A significant highlight of these trains is their energy-efficient design. They will incorporate regenerative braking technology, which generates electricity during braking and feeds it back into the grid. This innovation contributes to lower carbon emissions, making them a greener transportation option.
The introduction of this large fleet is expected to shift a considerable volume of local traffic from roads to railways, enhancing green and clean transport capacity across the country.
