Odisha’s Rail Network Set for Major Expansion to Support Nearly 500 Additional Trains

Comprehensive infrastructure projects and station redevelopments to enhance connectivity and capacity across the state

Indian Railways is undertaking a significant expansion of its infrastructure in Odisha, aimed at boosting the state’s rail capacity to accommodate nearly 500 additional trains. This development is part of a broader strategy to enhance connectivity, support economic growth, and improve passenger amenities in the region. The expansion includes new rail lines, capacity enhancement projects, and station redevelopment initiatives, reflecting Indian Railways’ commitment to strengthening Odisha’s transport network.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently outlined the scope of these projects, emphasizing their strategic importance in augmenting Odisha’s rail infrastructure. Central to these efforts is the ongoing four-line expansion of the Howrah-Chennai main rail corridor, a critical artery that facilitates the movement of freight and passengers along India’s eastern coast. This corridor upgrade will significantly increase the line’s capacity and operational efficiency, enabling smoother and more frequent train services.

In addition to corridor enhancements, Indian Railways is executing projects worth approximately Rs 90,000 crore across Odisha. These include the construction of new rail lines connecting key districts and regions, such as Junagarh-Nabarangpur, Nabarangpur-Jeypore, Jeypore-Malkangiri, Bargarh-Nuapada, Gunupur-Therubali, Khurda Road-Balangir, and Bimlagarh-Talcher. These lines are expected to unlock new economic opportunities by improving access to remote and tribal-dominated areas, facilitating the movement of goods and passengers, and integrating regional markets.

The Khurda Road-Balangir rail line project, in particular, is targeted for completion by 2027. This line will provide a vital link between central Odisha and western districts, fostering regional development and connectivity. Furthermore, a fresh Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared for the proposed Puri-Konark rail connectivity project, aimed at enhancing access to prominent pilgrimage and tourist destinations.

Complementing these infrastructure projects, 59 railway stations across Odisha are undergoing redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). This nationwide initiative focuses on modernizing stations to provide world-class passenger amenities, improve safety, and enhance the overall travel experience. Key stations included in Odisha’s redevelopment plan are Bhubaneswar, Puri, Sambalpur, Berhampur, Talcher, and Baripada. These upgraded stations will serve as important hubs, supporting increased passenger volumes and promoting tourism and commerce.

In line with the expanded infrastructure, Indian Railways is introducing a new train service between Puri and Koraput, designated as the 18407/18408 Puri–Koraput–Puri Tri-Weekly Express. This service will provide direct rail connectivity between the coastal city of Puri and large parts of western and southern Odisha for the first time. The route traverses key stations including Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Angul, Sambalpur, Bargarh Road, Balangir, Titlagarh, Kesinga, Muniguda, Rayagada, Tikiri, Laxmipur Road, Kakiriguma, and Damanjodi.

The introduction of this train service is expected to significantly enhance mobility for various segments of the population, including pilgrims, tourists, students, healthcare seekers, and business travelers. It will particularly benefit the KBK region (Kalahandi-Balangir-Koraput), known for its tribal communities and developmental challenges, by improving access to education, employment, and healthcare facilities.

These comprehensive developments in Odisha’s rail infrastructure align with Indian Railways’ broader objectives of expanding network capacity, promoting regional connectivity, and fostering inclusive growth. By integrating remote areas with major economic centers and upgrading passenger facilities, the projects will contribute to the socio-economic transformation of Odisha and strengthen its role in the national transport framework.

As these projects progress towards completion, Odisha is poised to witness a new era of rail connectivity that supports increased train operations, enhances passenger convenience, and stimulates regional development across the state.
