The revision in schedule was announced by RVNL Chairman and Managing Director Saleem Ahmad during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, where he emphasized the strategic importance of this high-value project.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper programme is being executed through Kinet Railway Solutions, a joint venture between RVNL and Russian rolling stock manufacturer Transmashholding (TMH). The project is valued at approximately Rs 14,400 crore and includes a 35-year maintenance commitment.
Earlier in February, RVNL had projected the prototype delivery to Indian Railways by June 2026 as the first major milestone under the contract. The delay marks a shift from that original timeline.
Under the contract, the RVNL-led venture is responsible for manufacturing 120 Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets, each comprising 16 coaches, totaling 1,920 coaches.
The Ministry of Railways has awarded sleeper train manufacturing contracts to three entities: BEML, Kinet Railway Solutions, and a consortium of Titagarh Rail Systems and BHEL.
The first operational Vande Bharat Sleeper service, running between Howrah and Kamakhya, began service earlier in 2026. This train was developed by BEML using technology from the Integral Coach Factory.
The upcoming trains built by Kinet Railway Solutions are expected to feature upgraded interiors, enhanced passenger comfort, and modern design elements optimized for overnight travel.
