Advanced Video Surveillance System Enhances Security at KSR Bengaluru Railway Station
South Western Railway commissions cutting-edge surveillance infrastructure to bolster passenger safety and operational monitoring
In a significant stride towards strengthening railway security infrastructure, South Western Railway (SWR) has commissioned a state-of-the-art Video Surveillance System (VSS) at the Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna (KSR) Bengaluru Railway Station, one of India’s busiest transit hubs. Operational since mid-May 2026, this advanced surveillance network is designed to provide comprehensive, real-time monitoring across the station premises, thereby enhancing passenger safety and enabling efficient management of station activities.
KSR Bengaluru station, located at Majestic, serves as a critical junction in the Indian Railways network, handling a substantial volume of daily commuters and long-distance travelers. Given the station’s strategic importance and high footfall, the deployment of a robust surveillance system aligns with Indian Railways’ broader commitment to modernizing security protocols and leveraging technology to ensure passenger welfare.
The newly installed VSS encompasses 168 IP-based high-definition CCTV cameras, all compliant with the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) specifications. These cameras have been strategically positioned to cover key areas including station entrances and exits, circulating zones, booking offices, reservation halls, concourses, platforms, subways, foot overbridges, waiting halls, and other vulnerable locations. This extensive coverage facilitates uninterrupted, round-the-clock monitoring of passenger movements and station operations.
Integral to the system’s effectiveness is its integration with an advanced Video Management System (VMS) equipped with Video Analytics (VA) capabilities. The VA component enables intelligent surveillance by automatically detecting predefined security events and identifying abnormal activities. This proactive monitoring tool significantly enhances situational awareness, allowing security personnel to respond swiftly and efficiently to potential incidents.
Further augmenting the security framework, the VSS incorporates Facial Recognition Software (FRS), which is linked to a database containing records of 1,086 individuals with criminal backgrounds. This integration empowers security agencies to identify suspicious persons promptly and strengthens overall surveillance measures within the station environment.
To facilitate centralized and effective monitoring, a modern video wall measuring 20 feet by 9 feet has been installed at the Railway Protection Force (RPF) control centre. This high-resolution display enables real-time visualization of multiple camera feeds, thereby improving the capacity of security personnel to oversee station activities and coordinate rapid responses during emergencies.
In addition to the technological advancements, the entire VSS network and its associated systems have undergone a rigorous cybersecurity audit conducted by the Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) Directorate in Bengaluru. The system successfully received a “Zero Vulnerability Report, underscoring its compliance with stringent cybersecurity and information security standards. Moreover, all network switches deployed within the system have been vetted and cleared through the Telecom Trusted Portal, adhering to Government of India guidelines for trusted telecom products.
The commissioning of this sophisticated surveillance infrastructure at KSR Bengaluru station exemplifies Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to integrate modern technology into its security operations. By enhancing monitoring capabilities and ensuring data security, the project not only safeguards passengers but also contributes to the efficient management of one of the nation’s key railway nodes.
