Bengaluru-Mumbai Superfast Train Scheduled for June Inauguration; Vande Bharat Sleeper Service Planned
New rail connectivity to enhance passenger convenience and regional commerce along central Karnataka corridor
The Indian Railways is set to introduce a new Superfast train service connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai, with operations expected to commence by the end of June. This development marks a significant enhancement in rail connectivity between two major metropolitan hubs, following nearly three decades since the launch of the Udyan Express, the first direct train on this route.
The Ministry of Railways had approved the addition of a second direct Superfast train between Bengaluru and Mumbai last year, aiming to address the growing passenger demand and facilitate smoother transit across these key economic centers. The forthcoming service will traverse a central Karnataka route, linking important regional cities including Tumakuru, Davanagere, Haveri, Hubballi-Dharwad, and Belagavi before reaching Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
This route selection is strategically significant, as it not only connects the capital city of Karnataka with Maharashtra’s commercial capital but also integrates several emerging urban and industrial centers in Karnataka. The enhanced connectivity is anticipated to benefit lakhs of passengers by reducing travel time and improving accessibility, while also stimulating trade and commerce along the corridor.
In addition to the launch of this Superfast train, plans are underway to upgrade the service to a Vande Bharat Sleeper train in the near future. The Vande Bharat Sleeper will represent a semi-high-speed overnight service, designed to elevate passenger comfort and convenience on long-distance journeys. This initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ broader modernization agenda, which emphasizes faster, safer, and more comfortable travel experiences.
The new train will be developed using technology from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, with manufacturing support from Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML). The train’s distinctive orange and grey livery will distinguish it as a modern, premium service on the Bengaluru-Mumbai corridor. Upon launch, it will become the second Vande Bharat Sleeper train in the country, underscoring Indian Railways’ commitment to expanding its fleet of semi-high-speed trains.
The introduction of this service reflects Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity in key economic regions, improve operational efficiency, and provide passengers with state-of-the-art travel options. The Bengaluru-Mumbai route is one of the busiest in the country, serving millions of passengers annually, and the addition of this Superfast train is expected to alleviate congestion on existing services while offering a faster alternative.
