Railway Board Sanctions New Stoppage for Howrah-Patna Vande Bharat Express at Jamui
Enhancing Connectivity and Passenger Convenience on a Key East-Central Corridor
The Railway Board has approved an additional halt for the Howrah-Patna Vande Bharat Express at Jamui station, marking a strategic enhancement in the train’s operational schedule. This decision aligns with Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to improve regional connectivity and passenger accessibility on vital routes within the East Central Railway zone.
Commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 24, 2023, the Howrah-Patna Vande Bharat Express commenced commercial operations two days later, on September 26, 2023. Operated and maintained by the East Central Railway (ECR), this semi-high-speed train service has been a significant addition to the rail network, providing swift and comfortable travel between Howrah in West Bengal and Patna in Bihar.
The train covers a distance of 532 kilometers in approximately 6 hours and 50 minutes, operating six days a week, with Wednesday designated as its weekly off day. Prior to the recent approval, the train made scheduled stops at eight stations en route: Durgapur, Asansol, Jamtara, Jasidih, Luckeesarai, Mokama, Bakhtiyarpur, and Patna Saheb. The newly sanctioned experimental halt at Jamui station, which falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the Danapur Division, is expected to commence at the earliest feasible date as directed by the Railway Board.
This addition is anticipated to benefit passengers from Jamui and adjoining areas by providing direct access to one of the country’s premier train services, thereby fostering greater regional integration and economic activity. Jamui’s inclusion as a stoppage point reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to balancing speed with accessibility, ensuring that the advantages of modern rail infrastructure reach a broader demographic.

The train comprises 20 coaches, featuring two classes of seating: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC). The fare structure is designed to be competitive, with tickets priced at Rs 1,470 for AC Chair Car and Rs 2,695 for Executive Chair Car on the Howrah-Patna segment.
Equipped with cutting-edge safety and comfort features, the train incorporates the Kavach system—India’s indigenous automatic train protection technology—which significantly enhances operational safety by preventing collisions and signal passing at danger. This integration underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to leveraging technology for safer and more reliable rail travel.
The current timetable schedules train number 22347 to depart from Howrah at 3:50 pm, arriving in Patna at 10:40 pm. The return service, train number 22348, leaves Patna Junction at 8:00 am and reaches Howrah by 2:35 pm. With the inclusion of Jamui as a stoppage, the East Central Railway is expected to release an updated timetable reflecting the revised schedule.
