Centre to Invest Nearly ₹48,000 Crore in Telangana’s Rail Infrastructure: Railways Minister

Hyderabad: Telangana has been allocated ₹5,454 crore for railway projects in the Union Budget 2026–27, marking a marginal increase of ₹118 crore over the ₹5,336 crore provided in 2024–25, Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw announced.

The minister said that the Centre has lined up railway investments worth approximately ₹47,984 crore for Telangana, covering a wide range of development initiatives across the state. Highlighting the scale of the investment, Vaishnaw noted that the average annual railway outlay for the undivided Andhra Pradesh between 2009 and 2014 stood at just ₹886 crore.

“The allocation to Telangana represents nearly a six-fold increase compared to the average spending during 2009–14 for the combined state,” he said.

However, neighbouring Andhra Pradesh continues to receive higher financial support. For 2026–27, Andhra Pradesh has been allocated ₹10,134 crore, with total railway investments estimated at around ₹92,000 crore — almost double the investment planned for Telangana.

According to railway officials, the ₹48,000-crore investment programme in Telangana will focus on capacity expansion, enhancement of passenger amenities, strengthening freight corridors, station redevelopment, construction of new railway lines, workshop modernisation, and major infrastructure upgrades at Kazipet junction, a key railway hub in the region.

In parallel, redevelopment of 40 railway stations in Telangana under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is progressing at a rapid pace, with completion targeted by 2027, officials added.

RRTS Proposed Between Hyderabad and Warangal

Travel time between Hyderabad and Warangal could be reduced to under an hour with the proposed Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor between the two cities. The proposal was highlighted in the Economic Survey 2025–26.

Designed for operational speeds of 160–180 kmph, the RRTS corridor aims to significantly cut travel time on the high-demand Hyderabad–Warangal route. Warangal, a major railway gateway to southern India, is expected to see enhanced integration with Hyderabad through the high-speed link, improving regional connectivity and enabling faster daily commuting.
