India Emerges as a Global Exporter of Advanced Railway Technology

India is rapidly establishing itself as a key global supplier of railway technology, with domestically designed and manufactured railway components now being exported to advanced economies worldwide.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted this progress during his visit to the Medha Bogies Factory in Hyderabad on July 12, 2026. He emphasized that the country’s railway manufacturing ecosystem has evolved beyond serving domestic needs and is now catering to international markets.

“India is becoming a major railway products manufacturer and exporter,” Vaishnaw said. He noted that, under the Make in India initiative, complex railway components such as electronics and propulsion systems are not only designed and manufactured domestically but also exported to countries including France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, the US, and Japan.

The minister underlined that India’s success is rooted in a sustained focus on indigenous design, manufacturing quality, and supply chain integration. “Ensuring design focus, quality standards, and an aligned supply chain is the way we are working,” he said. Vaishnaw also mentioned discussions held earlier that day with the IT industry about growing semiconductor design capabilities critical for railway manufacturing.

During his visit to the Medha Bogies Factory, Vaishnaw reviewed various stages of coach and component production and engaged with engineers and production teams to assess the facility’s capabilities. He discussed workforce training, skill development, modern manufacturing practices, quality control processes, and production capacity.

Accompanied by Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy, Vaishnaw’s visit reflects the broader push by Indian Railways to expand domestic production of rolling stock, propulsion systems, and other advanced railway technologies, while boosting exports in line with the Make in India program.

Over the past decade, India has transformed from an importer to a producer and exporter of critical railway technologies. Domestic manufacturers now supply propulsion equipment, signalling systems, traction electronics, coaches, and wagons for both domestic use and foreign markets.

The government’s strategic focus on localisation, technology development, and domestic manufacturing aims to reduce import dependence and position India as a leading global railway manufacturing hub.
