Indian Railways Approves Hot Buffet Coaches for Speeds up to 160 kmph

Indian Railways is set to modernise onboard catering on some of its fastest trains with the introduction of LHB EOG hot buffet coaches. Approved by the Railway Board, these new coaches aim to replace traditional pantry cars, enhancing food service while supporting train operations at speeds up to 160 kmph.

The newly authorised coaches, designated LWCBACAA, feature Fiat bogies and have a maximum axle load of around 16.25 tonnes (160 kN). They have received final speed certification after rigorous evaluation by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety.

The Railway Board noted that the operation of these coaches at 160 kmph will depend on the readiness of railway infrastructure. Tracks must meet specified geometry and structural standards in line with the Indian Railway Permanent Way Manual, 2024. Sections designed for speeds between 110 kmph and 160 kmph must also adhere to standards issued by the Railway Board and RDSO. Signalling and interlocking systems will require compliance with the Indian Railway Signal Engineering Manual, 2021.

To support higher-speed operations, infrastructure upgrades will include measures to prevent animals from straying onto the tracks along high-speed corridors.

Safety enhancements for the new coaches include continuous monitoring of inspections via OMS, TRCS, and oscillography data, installation of additional metallic safety slings under the coaches, and phased retrofitting of 160 kN air springs. Maintenance protocols for LHB coaches will follow established manuals, with quick responses mandated for any primary coil spring failures and regular upkeep of earthing systems and electrical panels.

Railway officials anticipate that these hot buffet coaches will be deployed on high-speed and premium trains such as Vande Bharat and other express routes. The upgrade is expected to significantly improve onboard catering services on long-distance journeys, complementing Indian Railways’ broader efforts to enhance passenger amenities and accelerate rolling stock modernisation.

This initiative marks a significant step towards preparing India’s railway network for faster and more efficient train travel in the near future.
