Indian Railways Sanctions ₹220 Crore for Mararikulam – Alappuzha Doubling Project

Indian Railways has approved the doubling of the 10.65 km Mararikulam – Alappuzha section on the Southern Railway network, with a sanctioned cost of ₹220.51 crore. This initiative is part of a larger effort to augment capacity through doubling, tripling, quadrupling, flyover, and bypass projects.

Currently, the Mararikulam – Alappuzha stretch remains the only single-line section on the Ernakulam – Turavur – Alappuzha – Ambalapuzha – Kayankulam corridor, where other doubling works are either completed or underway.

The doubling is expected to enable the operation of 9 additional passenger trains in each direction daily and support freight traffic of 2.88 million tonnes per annum. It is also projected to generate an additional net annual revenue of approximately ₹3.08 crore through increased passenger and freight volumes.

The project will enhance operational efficiency by reducing train detention, resulting in faster and smoother operations. It aims to improve line capacity, punctuality, and strengthen regional connectivity.

Identified under Indian Railways’ Mission 3000 MT and the High Density Traffic Network Corridor, the project demonstrates strong financial returns with a Financial Internal Rate of Return (FIRR) of 3.99% and an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) of 22.30%.

This approval highlights Indian Railways’ ongoing commitment to expanding rail infrastructure and supporting the socio-economic development of Keralam with modern, future-ready facilities.
