The project involves upgrading the current 1×25 kV traction system to a more advanced 2×25 kV configuration across 164 track kilometres. Along with this, new power supply infrastructure will be installed to support the enhanced setup.
This route forms part of the Highly Utilised Network (HUN) Route-9, a strategically important corridor that connects Ajmer, Indore, Khandwa, Akola, Purna, Mudkhed, Secunderabad, Mahbubnagar, and Dhone.
As a critical high-density corridor, the Parbhani–Mudkhed section plays a vital role in handling both freight and long-distance passenger traffic.
The upgraded traction system aims to improve the availability and stability of power supply for train operations. This enhancement is expected to accommodate heavier freight loads and support high-speed services such as the Vande Bharat Express trains.
This investment aligns with Indian Railways’ national goal to transport 3,000 million tonnes of freight annually by 2029-30.
