Visakhapatnam railway station, managed by the South Coast Railway (SCoR) zone, serves nearly 80,000 passengers daily with an average of 113 trains passing through each day. The station functions as a major coaching terminal in the region.
The comprehensive remodelling project includes the construction of additional lines and platforms, and the installation of Electronic Interlocking (EI) systems. Currently, terminating and through trains face delays due to surface crossings within the yard, which lead to detention at approach signals and reduced platform availability. The remodelling will minimise these surface crossings, reduce detention time, improve platform occupancy, and enable the handling of more trains efficiently.
Key components of the Visakhapatnam Coaching Yard upgrade include dismantling and reorganising line loop lines and point zones, widening the existing six platforms, and constructing six additional platforms with modern passenger amenities. Additionally, six new railway lines will be added.
The project will also develop passenger utilities such as ramps, lifts, and escalators on the widened platforms to enhance accessibility and convenience. A new entrance will be created on the eastern side of the station, along with relocating the Passenger Reservation System (PRS).
Further improvements include the installation of Electronic Interlocking in the station yard, development of surface parking facilities, and an efficient circulating area plan to better manage passenger movement and traffic.
This upgrade project will allow Visakhapatnam railway station to handle increasing passenger demand more effectively while improving train punctuality and reducing delays.
