Thermal power plants in India generate nearly 340 million tonnes of fly ash annually. Historically, this byproduct has accumulated as an environmental challenge. Indian Railways aims to transform the scenario by creating a dedicated logistics network utilizing specialized containers and designated rail corridors. This system will transport fly ash cleanly and efficiently from power plants to industries that utilize it as raw material.
Fly ash has immense value as a sustainable building material. When properly transported and used, it contributes to cheaper bricks and cement, thereby supporting affordable housing initiatives in both urban and rural areas across the country.
This initiative not only reduces waste but also embodies the principles of a circular economy—turning waste into valuable resources that aid in India’s growing infrastructure needs. By integrating fly ash transport into the railway system, Indian Railways is driving an eco-friendly solution that aligns with national development goals.
