Indian Railways Sanctions ₹201 Crore Kavach Project for Ambala Division

Indian Railways has approved the installation of the Kavach Automatic Train Protection system on the remaining Broad Gauge sections of the Ambala Division of Northern Railway. This safety project covers 811 route kilometres and has been sanctioned at a cost of ₹201 crore.

The installation is part of a larger programme aimed at equipping balance routes with Kavach, featuring an LTE-based communication backbone.

Key routes included in this project are Ambala Cantonment–Ludhiana, Kalka–Chandigarh–New Morinda–Sahnewal, Sirhind–Daulatpur Chowk, Rajpura–Bathinda–Shri Ganganagar, and Ludhiana–Dhuri–Jakhal sections. These corridors connect the states of Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh and handle significant passenger and freight traffic.

Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system that enhances operational safety by preventing Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), automatically applying brakes where necessary, controlling train speeds in critical situations, and reducing collision risks.

The implementation of Kavach across these routes is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing commitment to improve safety, reliability, and capacity on high-density and strategic railway lines.
