Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express Emerges as Vital Transport Link in Jammu & Kashmir

Within ten days of commencing operations, the extended Jammu Tawi-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express has served nearly 45,000 passengers, underscoring its critical role in enhancing connectivity and socio-economic development in the region.

The inauguration of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link on 6 June 2025 marked a transformative milestone for Indian Railways and the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. This 272-kilometre corridor, traversing challenging Himalayan terrain, has been instrumental in integrating the region with the national railway network. Building upon this foundation, the launch of the augmented 20-coach Jammu Tawi-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express on 30 April 2026 has further revolutionized rail travel in the area.

Within just ten days of regular service commencement on 2 May 2026, the four daily Vande Bharat train services operating on the Jammu-Srinagar corridor transported 44,727 passengers. This ridership reflects the train’s rapid acceptance and its emergence as a lifeline for residents, tourists, pilgrims, and traders alike. The first week alone saw 28,762 passengers utilizing the service, highlighting the substantial demand for reliable, high-speed rail connectivity in the region.

The corridor is served by two pairs of Vande Bharat trains: Train Nos. 26401/26402 operating six days a week except Tuesdays, and Train Nos. 26403/26404 running daily except Wednesdays. Together, these services ensure four train operations per day on at least five days weekly, maintaining continuous connectivity even on days when only one pair operates. This schedule addresses the diverse travel needs of local commuters and visitors, facilitating seamless movement across Jammu and Srinagar.

Meeting and Exceeding Demand

The introduction of the extended 20-coach Vande Bharat trains has significantly increased capacity on this high-demand route. Previously, an 8-coach train frequently operated at full capacity, but current services are approaching near-full occupancy despite the increased coach count. Peak daily ridership figures reached as high as 5,657 passengers, with weekend travel exhibiting particularly strong demand. Notably, occupancy rates exceeded 95% on several days, with a peak of 98.21% recorded on 10 May 2026, underscoring the corridor’s growing importance as a tourism and commuter artery.

This surge in ridership not only reflects the corridor’s strategic importance but also the success of Indian Railways in matching capacity with passenger demand. The Vande Bharat’s modern amenities, speed, and reliability have made it the preferred mode of travel, particularly given the region’s challenging weather and terrain conditions.

Enhancing Regional Connectivity and Economic Activity

The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express serves a broad spectrum of passengers, including pilgrims visiting religious sites, students commuting for education, government officials, traders, and tourists. The train’s ability to operate in extreme weather conditions, including temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius, ensures uninterrupted connectivity even when road transport on the National Highway is disrupted by snowfall or landslides.

By providing a dependable and efficient alternative to air and road travel, the Vande Bharat Express has contributed to reducing travel time to under five hours between Jammu and Srinagar. This improvement fosters greater economic integration, facilitates tourism growth, and enhances access to essential services across the region.

Affordable and Sustainable Travel Option

In addition to speed and convenience, the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express offers a cost-effective travel solution. Chair Car fares, inclusive of meals, are competitively priced well below budget airline tickets and private taxi fares, making high-quality rail travel accessible to a wider population. Indian Railways has deliberately priced these services below operational costs to promote inclusivity and encourage greater utilization of rail infrastructure.

The journey itself is notable for its scenic value, passing over engineering marvels such as the Chenab and Anji bridges and through Himalayan tunnels. This route not only connects two important cities but also provides passengers with a unique travel experience through one of the world’s most picturesque rail corridors.

Strategic Timing for Tourism and Regional Development

The expansion of Vande Bharat services coincides with the onset of Kashmir’s peak tourist season, enhancing the region’s appeal as a premier destination. The improved rail connectivity supports the influx of visitors to key attractions such as Dal Lake, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg, contributing to the local economy and employment.

Indian Railways’ readiness to accommodate anticipated increases in passenger volume during the summer months reflects its commitment to supporting Jammu & Kashmir’s socio-economic progress. The Jammu Tawi-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express thus embodies not only a transportation solution but also a catalyst for regional prosperity and integration.

In summary, the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express exemplifies Indian Railways’ vision of modern, inclusive, and resilient rail infrastructure. By delivering reliable, affordable, and high-capacity services, it strengthens Jammu & Kashmir’s connectivity, promotes tourism, and facilitates economic growth, reinforcing the railway’s role as a key driver of national development.
