The Ranchi-New Delhi Rajdhani Express, a flagship premium service operated by the South Eastern Railway (SER) zone, is set to incorporate a new stoppage at Latehar station in Jharkhand. This development, approved by the Railway Board, marks a strategic move to improve accessibility and connectivity for passengers in the region, reflecting Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to optimize route efficiency while catering to emerging passenger demand.
Introduced in 2001, the Ranchi-New Delhi Rajdhani Express (train numbers 12453/12454) has been a vital link between Jharkhand’s capital and the national capital, covering a distance of approximately 1,246 kilometers in a scheduled journey time of 17 hours and 55 minutes. Operating on a weekly basis, the train currently halts at nine stations en route, including Lohardaga, Daltonganj, Garwa Road, Nagar Untari, Renukut, Chopan, Sonbhadra, Prayagraj Junction, and Kanpur Central.
In a formal communication dated April 27, 2026, the Railway Board conveyed the Ministry of Railways’ approval for an experimental stoppage at Latehar station, which falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the Dhanbad division of the East Central Railway (ECR) zone. The directive instructs the concerned zonal railways to implement this new halt at the earliest feasible date and to update the train’s timetable accordingly.
Latehar station’s inclusion is anticipated to serve multiple objectives. Primarily, it will provide enhanced rail connectivity to passengers from Latehar and its adjoining areas, facilitating easier access to the national capital and other major cities along the route. This aligns with Indian Railways’ broader mandate to foster regional development by integrating smaller towns into the mainstream rail network, thereby promoting economic activity and social mobility.
The Ranchi-New Delhi Rajdhani Express is renowned for its speed, punctuality, and superior onboard amenities. The train’s composition includes First AC, Second AC, and Third AC coaches, catering to a diverse passenger demographic. Current fare structures for the Ranchi-New Delhi segment are set at Rs 4,795 for First AC, Rs 3,395 for Second AC, and Rs 2,190 for Third AC, with dynamic pricing applicable to optimize revenue management based on demand fluctuations.
The train’s schedule remains consistent, with train number 12453 departing Ranchi every Sunday at 17:15 hours and arriving at New Delhi the following day at 11:10 hours. The return service, train number 12454, leaves New Delhi every Saturday at 16:10 hours, reaching Ranchi at 09:45 hours the next day. The addition of Latehar as a stoppage will necessitate adjustments to this timetable, which the South Eastern Railway zone is expected to announce imminently.
