In a significant move to strengthen fuel logistics and rail-based freight movement, Indian Railways has partnered with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to establish a Gati Shakti multi-modal cargo terminal on the outskirts of Jammu.
The agreement was formalised between Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager representing the Jammu Division of Indian Railways, and Chandan Chauhan, Territory Manager (Retail) at BPCL.
Strategic Infrastructure Boost
The upcoming terminal, to be developed at Bajalta, is aligned with the Government of India’s PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, aimed at enhancing multimodal connectivity and improving logistics efficiency across the country.
Officials noted that the project will:
- Streamline the transportation of petroleum products
- Strengthen coordination between Indian Railways and public sector enterprises
- Enhance regional trade and logistics infrastructure
Capacity and Operational Highlights
The facility is designed with a storage capacity of 109,225 kilolitres and will be capable of handling two full rakes simultaneously. This translates to an estimated monthly throughput of approximately 162,000 metric tonnes of petroleum products.
To ensure safety and efficiency, the terminal will utilize modern tank wagons for handling operations.
Timeline
According to officials, the cargo terminal is expected to become operational by the end of this month, marking a major step forward in securing fuel supply chains and boosting rail logistics in the region.
