In response to surging demand on long-distance overnight routes, the Ministry of Railways has decided to manufacture a 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper trainset, significantly enhancing passenger capacity and onboard amenities.
The expanded configuration will increase total berth capacity from 823 berths in the existing 16-coach version to 1,224 berths, adding 401 additional berths per train. The new trainsets are proposed to be manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, under the Make in India initiative.
Demand Drives Expansion
The decision follows the recent launch of Vande Bharat Sleeper services between Guwahati and Howrah, flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to railway officials, these services are running at over 100 per cent occupancy, highlighting strong passenger demand and the need for higher-capacity trainsets on busy corridors.
Design and Timeline
The 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper is currently in the design stage, with the prototype rake expected to roll out by 2026. A senior railway official said the larger configuration is aimed at improving passenger-carrying capacity while maintaining high standards of comfort and service on long-haul routes.
Proposed Coach Composition
The planned 24-coach formation will comprise:
-
17 AC 3-Tier coaches
-
5 AC 2-Tier coaches
-
1 AC First Class coach
-
1 AC pantry car
This composition will create a total capacity of 1,224 berths, enabling Indian Railways to better serve high-demand routes with fewer frequency constraints.
Enhanced Passenger Amenities
The new Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets will offer modern, passenger-centric features, including:
-
Ergonomically designed berths
-
Individual reading lights
-
Mobile and laptop charging points
-
Wi-Fi-enabled passenger information and infotainment systems
-
Vacuum-assisted toilets
-
Improved luggage space
-
Contemporary interior fittings
Special provisions for Divyangjan passengers, such as accessible toilets and ramps, will be incorporated into the design.
Advanced Technology and Performance
The 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper will be equipped with:
-
Advanced propulsion and control systems
-
Regenerative braking for improved energy efficiency
-
Crashworthy stainless-steel car bodies meeting modern safety standards
The trainset will be designed for a maximum operational speed of 160 kmph, ensuring faster and more efficient overnight travel.
Focus on Capacity and Comfort
Railway sources said the introduction of the 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper underscores Indian Railways’ focus on capacity augmentation, technological advancement, and delivery of world-class comfort and safety. The move is expected to play a key role in meeting rising passenger demand while enhancing the overall long-distance travel experience across the country.
