The comprehensive ₹3,000-crore project includes track tripling and electrification across the busy Grand Trunk route between Kazipet and Balharshah. This enhancement aims to improve operational efficiency and enable seamless train movement on a route plagued by heavy congestion due to numerous coal and cement sidings.
Earlier phases saw the completion of the 33-km Raghavapuram-Mandamarri tripling section in 2016. The full tripling and electrification works for the remaining stretch were sanctioned during 2015-16. Of the 203 km covered, 159 km lie in Telangana and 44 km in Maharashtra. Since 2020, sections of the project have been commissioned in stages.
The only pending work remains a small portion near Balharshah station, under Central Railway’s jurisdiction. This involves linking the newly laid third line to the Balharshah yard, with ongoing progress reported.
SCR General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava officially congratulated the teams responsible for this milestone, highlighting the project’s critical role in decongesting a near-saturated line and supporting increased rail traffic between northern and southern India.
