Achieved on July 11, 2026, this accomplishment advances the city’s urban mass transit network and supports the expansion of the Purple Line, an essential addition to Kolkata Metro’s infrastructure.
This breakthrough follows a series of important developments within the last 50 days. Notably, Kolkata Metro recently bridged a critical 62-metre viaduct gap at Chingrighata on the Kavi Subhash-Airport (Orange Line) corridor. This achievement eliminated a major construction bottleneck, allowing faster progress toward the completion of the Orange Line.
Union Minister for Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw visited Kolkata to review the ongoing Metro projects. During his visit, he traveled by Metro from Jai Hind Bimanbandar to Noapara station, engaged with passengers to gather feedback on Metro services, and met with Metro staff.
Minister Vaishnaw also inspected the completed viaduct work at the Chingrighata site, praising the project’s execution speed. He announced plans to induct around 60 new-generation Metro trains over the next 4-5 years.
Since 2014, a total of 45 km of new Metro network has been commissioned in and around Kolkata, a significant increase compared to the 28 km constructed before 2014. These developments highlight the rapid progress in expanding Kolkata’s Metro connectivity.
