The comprehensive upgrade includes the redevelopment of 102 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Scheme and the construction of 538 flyovers and underpasses to improve connectivity and reduce congestion at railway crossings across the state.
The Railway Board has sanctioned approximately 61 projects spread across key regions including Jangalmahal, Murshidabad, Nandigram, Tehatta, Lalgarh, Karimpur, Nadia, Jalangi, Dakshin Dinajpur, and the Sundarbans. These projects also feature extensions of Metro Railway networks aimed at enhancing passenger amenities and infrastructure.
Chief Minister Adhikari emphasized the state’s commitment to support the Railways in facilitating timely land acquisition and obtaining no-objection certificates (NoCs) necessary for project execution. He directed district magistrates to establish timelines for land handover to expedite progress. Currently, the state has issued around 40 NoCs for foot bridges and underpasses and allocated land for at least 60 projects.
Railway Minister Vaishnaw assured that funding would not be a constraint, highlighting that the Railway Board provides full financing for land purchases, with state government support when needed.
Adhikari noted that the initiatives would connect every district in West Bengal to the railway network, boost suburban and mainline connectivity in both North and South Bengal, modernize stations, accelerate pending track works, and generate local employment opportunities. Collectively, these projects are expected to significantly enhance economic activity and improve travel for millions across the state.
