Additional General Manager Prateek Goswami led the celebrations by administering an environmental pledge to department heads, officers, and staff, urging collective responsibility for eco-friendly practices. Prior to this, senior officials joined a nationwide pledge ceremony via video conference addressed by Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar.
The campaign ran from May 15 to June 5, mobilizing railway staff, passengers, and local communities to promote environmental protection, waste segregation, and the reduction of single-use plastics. Activities included plantation drives, environmental walkathons, and a major rally at Matunga Workshop featuring nearly 500 participants focused on energy conservation and water security.
To enhance waste management, Central Railway installed twin color-coded dustbins for dry and wet waste across major stations and introduced plastic bottle crushing machines to encourage recycling. Passenger awareness was boosted through banners, workshops, and outreach campaigns with messages such as “Clean Platforms Green Future,” “Carry Your Own Water Bottle,” and “Say No to Plastic.”
In collaboration with IRCTC, biodegradable cutlery was launched at select catering points, including an eco-friendly bamboo stall at Nagpur Station. Vermicomposting facilities converting organic waste into manure were highlighted at Matunga Workshop and Reay Road Station. Additional cleanliness drives, scrap segregation, and premonsoon drain cleaning were conducted at workshops including Parel, Sanpada, Badnera, and Manmad.
The Mumbai Division intensified monitoring of vendor stalls to enforce single-use plastic bans, promoting biodegradable alternatives. Cultural programs and street plays organized by Central Railway’s Bharat Scouts and Guides were held at Bhusawal, Nagpur, Pandharpur, Shegaon, and Kalaburagi stations to raise climate change awareness. Workshops at Matunga trained staff and vendors on reducing microplastic pollution via better waste handling.
Tree plantation drives took place at multiple locations, with Reay Road Station emerging as a key contributor through plantation and composting initiatives on its premises.
Central Railway appealed to passengers to support sustainability efforts by using reusable bottles and bags and properly using segregated dustbins at stations. The railway reaffirmed its commitment to integrating green practices into daily operations and infrastructure development.
