North Western Railway Launches First Water Recycling Plant at Barmer Station

On June 4, 2026, North Western Railway (NWR) inaugurated its first Water Recycling Plant at Barmer Railway Station in a major move towards water conservation and sustainable resource management.

The facility, located in the station’s washing line area, was officially opened by NWR General Manager Amitabh during his one-day visit to Barmer. Constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 2.57 crore, the plant is designed to recycle water used in washing railway linen such as bedsheets, pillow covers, towels, and other onboard textiles.

Instead of discharging used water as wastewater, the plant treats and reuses it for subsequent washing operations, significantly reducing fresh water consumption. The treatment process involves multiple stages: removal of soap residue, dirt, and solids, followed by chemical and biological treatment, filtration, and disinfection.

GM Amitabh highlighted the importance of the project in conserving water, especially in western Rajasthan, a region prone to water scarcity and drought-like conditions. He announced plans to prepare proposals for similar water recycling plants across other divisions of NWR based on the success of this initiative.

The inauguration ceremony included key officials such as Jodhpur Divisional Railway Manager Anurag Tripathi, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Hitesh Yadav, and Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer Amit Swami, who welcomed the GM with a traditional Rajasthani turban and a ceremonial plant.

Following the inauguration, the General Manager inspected the ongoing redevelopment and modernization works at Barmer Railway Station, emphasizing the need for high standards of cleanliness and improved passenger amenities.

Officials pointed out the benefits of the water recycling plant, including substantial water savings, reduced dependency on groundwater and other freshwater sources, lower wastewater pollution, and decreased operational costs for the Railways.

This milestone reflects North Western Railway’s commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible resource utilization, supporting long-term water security in the region.
