CRIS Celebrates 41 Years of Pioneering Digital Transformation in Indian Railways

The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the technology division of the Ministry of Railways, marked its 41st Foundation Day on July 1, 2026, at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. The event brought together senior railway officials, industry experts, academicians, and CRIS staff to highlight ongoing advancements in Indian Railways’ digital modernization.

Over four decades, CRIS has developed and maintained several mission-critical digital systems that have revolutionized railway operations. Key platforms include the Passenger Reservation System (PRS), Freight Operations Information System, Unreserved Ticketing System, National Train Enquiry System, Control Office Application, and Indian Railways e-Procurement System. These applications have significantly enhanced operational efficiency, passenger experience, and system transparency.

Modernization efforts are underway to upgrade legacy applications with the latest technologies aimed at improving system scalability, reliability, and performance. Notably, CRIS showcased the RailOne SuperApp—a unified digital platform for passengers launched on its 40th Foundation Day last year. The app has garnered over 4.35 crore downloads and processes approximately 10 lakh transactions daily.

A major highlight was the progress on the modernized Passenger Reservation System. The upgraded PRS will leverage a contemporary technology stack capable of handling up to 1.25 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a fivefold increase from the current capacity of 25,000 bookings per minute. This enhancement will enable Indian Railways to manage increasing passenger demand more effectively.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) was emphasized as a central focus, with CRIS integrating AI-driven solutions across various operational domains. These applications include train path planning, freight flow management, predictive and preventive maintenance, and enhanced passenger services.

The 2026 Foundation Day seminar was themed “Governance in the Age of AI — Transformation from Digital Enterprise to Intelligent Network,” underscoring CRIS’s commitment to data-driven governance and intelligent decision-making within Indian Railways.

CRIS continues to collaborate with industry partners, academic institutions, and technology firms to support Indian Railways’ vision of creating a safer, smarter, and more efficient railway network. Established under the Ministry of Railways, CRIS remains pivotal in designing, implementing, and maintaining IT solutions across passenger services, freight operations, infrastructure management, and enterprise systems.
