Indian Railways Approves ₹432 Crore Electronic Interlocking Upgrade on Eastern Railway’s Asansol Division

Indian Railways has approved a ₹432 crore project to replace relay-based interlocking systems with advanced Electronic Interlocking (EI) at 27 stations and cabins, including one Integrated Booking System (IBS) location, on the High Density Network (HDN) and Highly Utilised Network (HUN) routes of the Asansol Division under Eastern Railway.

This project involves upgrading 28 relay-based installations—27 Panel Interlocking/Route Relay Interlocking (PI/RRI) and one IBS—with state-of-the-art EI systems. These upgrades aim to substantially enhance the safety, reliability, and operational efficiency of train movements in this critical railway zone.

The initiative is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing enhancement program targeting HDN and HUN routes where cutting-edge signalling technologies such as Kavach (train collision avoidance system), Automatic Block Signalling (ABS), and Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) are being introduced.

Electronic Interlocking employs computer-based control systems, replacing the traditional relay-based setup. This upgrade delivers multiple benefits including improved reliability, faster fault detection, simplified maintenance, and greater operational flexibility. It will also reinforce overall railway safety while enabling increased line capacity and smoother train operations on one of the busiest railway corridors across the network.
