On June 6, 2026, Indian Railways marked World Environment Day with a dedicated event at the Ministry of Railways, highlighting its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible resource management.

A key feature of the program was the launch of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 – Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) Booklet. This booklet, unveiled by Shri Satish Kumar, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Railway Board, aims to standardize waste management practices and promote consistent implementation of sustainable systems across the railway network.

In his address, Shri Satish Kumar stressed the importance of embedding sustainability into daily railway operations. He called upon all Zonal Railways to implement the Solid Waste Management Rules promptly and effectively. He also emphasized the need for strong monitoring mechanisms and the adoption of best practices to enhance waste management throughout Indian Railways.

The event included the administration of an environmental pledge to officers and staff, encouraging active participation in efforts to build a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable railway system.

Awards were presented during the occasion as part of the Swachhata Pakhwada campaign. North-Eastern Railway secured the first position, with North-Western Railway and Southern Railway earning second and third places respectively, recognizing their outstanding contributions to cleanliness and sanitation.
