Railway Board Approves India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Trainset for Commercial Operation

Introduction of a 10-car hydrogen fuel cell train on Northern Railway’s Jind-Sonipat section marks a significant milestone in sustainable rail transport

In a pioneering move towards green mobility, the Railway Board has granted formal approval for the introduction of India’s first hydrogen-powered trainset. The sanction, communicated on May 22, 2026, authorizes the deployment of a 10-car hydrogen fuel cell-based Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) trainset on the dedicated Jind-Sonipat section of the Northern Railway’s Delhi Division.

The approval letter, addressed to the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and Northern Railway, specifies that the train will operate at a maximum speed of 75 km/h. This project represents a key step in India’s efforts to adopt alternative fuel technologies within its vast railway network, aligning with global trends in sustainable rail transport.

The hydrogen trainset, designated as a 1200 kW DEMU, underwent successful oscillation trials in March 2026. These tests, conducted by RDSO as part of the comprehensive evaluation process, confirmed the train’s operational stability and safety parameters. The Railway Board’s approval follows these trials and the requisite clearances from the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety, underscoring the rigorous safety and performance standards adhered to in this initiative.

Operational logistics for the trainset have been carefully planned. While the train will run commercially on the Jind-Sonipat route, its scheduled maintenance will be carried out at the Shakurbasti depot. The Railway Board has also mandated that any movement of the trainset between Jind and Shakurbasti in a non-operational (dead) condition must be hauled by a locomotive, in compliance with existing codal provisions.

The introduction of hydrogen-powered trains places India among a select group of countries including Germany, Sweden, Japan, and China, which have already integrated hydrogen fuel cell technology into their rail systems. This development not only demonstrates India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions in the transport sector but also showcases the Indian Railways’ focus on innovation and sustainability.

Hydrogen fuel cell trains offer several advantages over conventional diesel-powered trains, including zero local emissions, reduced noise pollution, and the potential for lower operating costs in the long term. The successful deployment of this trainset is expected to serve as a model for future expansion of hydrogen traction across other suitable routes in the Indian Railways network.

This initiative aligns with the broader national objectives of promoting clean energy and achieving carbon neutrality in transportation.
