South Central Railway Maintains Key Role as South Coastal Railway Launches as 18th Zone

On June 1, 2026, the new South Coastal Railway (SCoR) zone officially commenced operations, marking it as the 18th zone of Indian Railways. This development led to the reorganisation of the South Central Railway (SCR), which was reduced from six divisions to three: Secunderabad, Nanded, and Hyderabad.

Train operations were clearly assigned between SCR and SCoR from midnight on May 31, 2026. However, several administrative and operational tasks, including budget allocation, project execution, and tender management, will be phased out gradually.

Key section transfers include the Kondapalli-Motumari segment moving from the Secunderabad to Vijayawada division, and the Raichur-Wadi section transferring from the Guntakal to Secunderabad division. Department heads from both zones are coordinating closely to ensure smooth operations.

Operating controllers for SCR and SCoR have established direct communication lines with station masters since June 1 to facilitate seamless coordination. Although SCoR assumes full responsibility within its divisions, some transitional overlaps, such as crew management and ongoing contracts, will be settled in due course.

Interim arrangements are in place for resource sharing, exemplified by the Raichur ballast depot—now under Secunderabad division—providing material under mutual agreements.

For the 2026-27 financial year, SCR has been allocated a record ₹13,026 crore for infrastructure development. This includes ₹5,454 crore for Telangana and ₹10,134 crore for Andhra Pradesh. Planned projects encompass line doubling, tripling, quadrupling, new lines, electrification, yard modernisation, and station enhancements. The infrastructure plan covers about 284 major projects valued over ₹50 crore, plus nearly 2,700 smaller works and approximately 150 surveys.

The SCR headquarters in Secunderabad now has 152 officers, down from 234, following the transfer of roughly 80 posts to SCoR. Non-gazetted staff numbers have also decreased from 2,900 to 1,941 after nearly 1,000 employees moved to the new zone. Additionally, the Peddapalli-Nizamabad section was reassigned to the Hyderabad division, while Latur Road-Parli Vaijnath and Mudkhed-Karkheli sections moved to the Nanded division.

Post-reorganisation, SCR’s network covers 3,603 km: Secunderabad division (1,835 km), Hyderabad (782 km), and Nanded (986 km). Meanwhile, SCoR spans 3,501 km across Vijayawada, Guntur, Guntakal, and Visakhapatnam divisions.

With infrastructure such as office buildings and staff accommodations at SCoR still under development, SCR will continue to provide support during the transition phase, according to Chief Public Relations Officer A. Sridhar.
